The Importance of Washing Your Car

I travel a lot, which means that I not only put a lot of wear and tear on my car…it also means that my car frequently gets dirty (depending on the weather as well as the time of year). Did you know that keeping your car is not only essential to its overall performance, but that it can also get you into trouble if you’re not careful? That’s right. I remember walking to class during college and passing other students’ vehicles, which were parked alongside the street. As I was walking, I happened to notice that one of the vehicles, a pickup truck, was barely visible under the thick, caked mud that covered it from top to bottom, front to back. I remember thinking how awful it was to drive around in a car that looked like that. How were they able to see? Surely, it must have violated some law. Well, wouldn’t you know it- later on that same day, I saw this same pickup truck with the owner inside of it pulled over along the side of a different street with a cop car behind it. As I later found out, if your vehicle is covered in such a way that it obstructs your view (as his was) or if it presents a danger to other drivers, then you will more than likely be having a chat with a police officer about it.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. You’re probably thinking that there is nothing inherently dangerous about someone’s car being caked with mud. However, if any part of that mud flies off of that person’s vehicle, then other people on the roadways may not react appropriately or may try to overcompensate for whatever debris is flying off the other vehicle. After all, if you were driving down a highway or major roadway at a good rate of speed and you couldn’t tell what it was that was coming off of another vehicle, you would probably try to avoid it too!

There are other reasons as well to want to wash your car. For instance, where my family is from, there is a lot of saltwater nearby, and that saltwater makes its way into the air even though you can’t see it. And over time, the accumulation of salt on your vehicle can cause all sorts of issues if you’re not cleaning it regularly. Well, I recently brought my car in because I had noticed that it was making a funny sound each time I accelerated past 50 miles per hour. I was shocked when the attendant informed me that they had to use a blowtorch to dislodge the salt accumulation that had attached itself to the undercarriage of my car onto the four wheel drive shaft. Had I been washing my car regularly during the wintertime, the problem wouldn’t have been as severe.

Another reason to run your vehicle through a quick car wash is because debris such as salt and even dead bugs can affix itself to the paint on your car and eventually wear it away. Keeping your car clean will not only preserve the look of your car, but it will also preserve the life of your car!
