Britain’s best-selling cars of 2022

The Vauxhall Corsa has maintained its lead in the 2022 sales charts topping the best-sellers list for the second month running. Overall, registrations of new cars in the UK slid more than 14% in March – usually the busiest month due to the change in registration plates.

After a promising first two months of 2022 that saw the new car market 23% ahead of the same point last year, the new car industry has endured the weakest March since 1998.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT), which collates the car registration data, described the latest monthly figures as “massively disappointing”, as March had been earmarked as the new car industry’s first key test for the year as registrations are typically higher than both January and February combined.

Sales results for each car manufacturer (and even for each model range) have been heavily influenced by supply factors, as car companies battle component shortages – another hangover of the Covid situation from the last two years. And we haven’t yet seen the impact of production stoppages that are now taking place as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Basically, the rest of 2022 is going to be a production nightmare for car companies.

This year, instead of producing a separate article that looks at the top ten new car registrations for each month, we will simply keep updating this article with the year-to-date results for the best-selling cars of 2022 throughout the year.

Britain’s best-selling cars of 2022 (as of March)

1. Vauxhall Corsa

Best-selling cars of 2022 – Vauxhall Corsa

The Vauxhall Corsa has continued to hold the top spot in the UK best-sellers list with March now in the rear-view mirror. The Corsa is continuing to sell in impressive numbers as 2022 progresses – as rivals like Ford and Volkswagen struggle to overcome supply shortages.

Despite its sales success, the Corsa has received distinctly average reviews from the motoring media, with an Expert Rating of just 64% on our Expert Rating Index – for both the combustion and electric versions.

2. Kia Sportage

Best-selling new cars of 2022 – Kia Sportage

After dipping out of the monthly sales charts altogether in February, the Kia Sportage returned to the best-sellers list in March with a seventh-place finish. Displaying that Kia is faring better than most with supply shortages, the Sportage doubled its annual sales numbers last month, and thus retains second place in the 2022 rankings.

The new Kia Sportage hasn’t received that many reviews yet, and currently holds an Expert Rating of 71% on our industry-leading Expert Rating Index. This could shift as more reviews are published in coming months.

3. Ford Puma

Best selling cars of 2022 – Ford Puma

Much like last year, the Ford Puma has recorded a strong start to 2022 – consistent sales figures for three consecutive months means that the Puma finds itself in third place after March. Ford will be hoping to avoid a repeat of 2021, when the Puma’s impressive start to the year was crippled by supply shortages.

The Puma has received plenty of praise from the UK motoring media, and currently holds an Expert Rating of 77% on our unique Expert Rating Index. That puts it top of the charts for supermini-based SUVs.

4. Hyundai Tucson

Best-selling cars of 2022 – Hyundai Tucson

Another consistent performer in the SUV class, the Hyundai Tucson outsold key rivals like the Ford Puma and Kia Sportage in March.

The new Tucson has received positive reviews from the motoring media, with a solid Expert Rating of 76% on our industry-leading Expert Rating Index.

5. Mini hatch

Best-selling cars of 2022 – Mini hatch

After ending 2021 in third place in the UK sales charts, the twice-facelifted Mini hatch has been selling up a storm over the last few months. However, the supermini was not a top-ten best-seller in March, and has subsequently dropped down the annual standings to fifth.

The Mini has received positive reviews, with an Expert Rating of 76% on our Expert Rating Index. The electric model doesn’t do so well, with a score of just 63%.

6. Tesla Model Y

While March was a disappointment for the new car industry as a whole, Tesla can be very proud of its performance – as the new Model Y SUV climbed the monthly sales charts to be the best-selling model in March.

The Model Y has been well-received by British critics since its arrival at the start of the year, with an Expert Rating of 82%, which is on par with the very best in the large SUV class.

7. Tesla Model 3

Although it is now being consistently outsold by its bigger Model Y sibling, the Tesla Model 3 saloon has now appeared in the monthly best-seller charts for two months running – a second place finish in March meaning that the Model 3 is now seventh in the annual rankings.

The UK’s best-selling all-electric car during 2021, The Tesla Model 3 has continually received high praise from reviewers, and currently holds an Expert Rating of 85%.

8. Nissan Qashqai

The best-selling SUV model in March, the Nissan Qashqai also snatched the title of top-selling UK-made model from the Mini hatch after an impressive month of sales that coincided with the arrival of the Qashqai e-Power range.

On sale since Autumn last year, the current-generation Nissan Qashqai holds an Expert Rating of 71%, which is reasonable for a medium SUV but nothing to really shout about.

9. Vauxhall Mokka

Best-selling cars of 2022 – Vauxhall Mokka

The Vauxhall Mokka represents – literally – the new face of Vauxhall. The company’s new ‘Vizor’ styling will roll out across the range over the next few years.

The Mokka is available as both a regular petrol/diesel model as well as an all-electric Mokka-e, which snared our Best New Small SUV title in The Car Expert Car of the Year Awards for 2021.

The new Mokka has received generally good media reviews, with an Expert Rating of 73% for the Mokka-e and 68% for the regular Mokka.

10. Kia Niro

Best selling cars of 2022 – Kia Niro

Another strong showing from Kia sees the ageing Kia Niro cling on to its top-ten status heading into April, suggesting that the Korean manufacturer is doing better than most in securing a supply of semiconductor chips.

The current Niro is in the twilight of its production life, with an all-new model already unveiled and set to reach the UK in the second half of this year.

The Kia Niro has received fairly mixed reviews, with the hybrid version holding an Expert Rating of 62% on our Expert Rating Index. The electric model does better, with a score of 84%.

The next update (April results) will be due in the first week of May 2022.
