NEW DELHI: In order to have minimum impact on business activity and ensure health of the employees, Indo-Japanese venture, Toyota Kirloskar Motor is preparing to produce 50 percent of its average production post lockdown, a senior executive told ETAuto.
“We will start our production with 50 percent manpower and make two teams which work in two shifts. Also, we are aligning suppliers with our production plan to parts. Within one week to ten days, we would be able to resume our proper production,” Raju B Ketkale, Deputy Managing Director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor told ETAuto.
However, he feels there will be challenges on the supplier side to restore to a regular production cycle because of labour shortage, especially in the Delhi-NCR region, for the periodic parts supply.
With the plan to restore production, we are considering automating processes like welding and paint shop up to 70{7e488363c11ee5ef50445c8c4fa770b6e6e4f99e57faea264a05ac52abb3ffe0} from the current 30{7e488363c11ee5ef50445c8c4fa770b6e6e4f99e57faea264a05ac52abb3ffe0} levels.Raju B Ketkale
The company had earlier faced a shortage of 35 child parts when the Coronavirus outbreak in China. It airlifted those parts from its subsidiaries in different countries. The company has prepared a restart manually to safeguard business continuity and secure the people from health hazards.
“The most critical issue is to take care of the lives of the people and their families. So, from that point of view, we established a very clear manual. Tracking employees from home to transportation to assembly line and the canteen,” added Ketkale.
Before any employee starts from home, he has to declare his health status and ensure social distancing and respiratory hygiene during bus travel by seating on alternate seats, commmute on a designated walk path, and locker room usage.
Apart from this, carmaker has mandated masks during the working hours and staggered timings of lunch. Moreover, the company has designed seating and floor plans in such a way that proper distance is maintained within the employees.
“With the plan to restore production, we are considering automating processes like welding and paint shop up to 70 percent from the current 30 percent levels,” added Ketkale.
Toyota Kirloskar Motors has two plants in Bidadi, Karnataka. One of the plants roll out models like Innova Crysta and Fortuner, while the other make Camry Hybrid and Yaris. The two plants have combined installed production capacity of 3.10 lakh units.
